Furnace sales and operations systems in Manitoba

Manitoba's long winter and its mix of gas and electric homes give advisors two very different kitchen-table conversations. A good system prepares them for both and keeps the dispatch board honest when the cold settles in.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

Manitoba has one of the longest heating seasons in southern Canada, and its homes split between natural gas and electricity. For a furnace company, that means two distinct sales conversations and a dispatch board that has to survive weeks of steady cold, not just a single snap.

We are a marketing and business consulting service, not a contractor. We do not install, repair or service furnaces, and we make no financing or lending promises. We design the sales and operations systems; your licensed technicians do the work.

Two homes, two conversations

About 52% of Manitoba households heated mainly with natural gas in 2023 and about 33% with electricity, according to Statistics Canada. Winnipeg dominates the volume, with Brandon, Steinbach, Winkler and Portage la Prairie as the next hubs.

Your advisors should prepare for:

  • The gas-furnace home. The owner wants reliability and a fair price. Good/better/best usually runs from a like-for-like furnace to a furnace with comfort upgrades, with a cold-climate heat pump as an add-on where the home suits it.
  • The electric-furnace home. The owner is often frustrated by winter bills. The presentation should open with operating-cost comparisons the homeowner can check, then move to equipment.

The good/better/best options service builds both sheets so advisors are not improvising.

The heat pump rebate and the load calculation

As of October 2026, Efficiency Manitoba's Air Source Heat Pump Rebate lists $2,000 for a centrally ducted cold-climate unit and $1,500 for a ductless one in existing primary residences. Registered suppliers can earn a $100 bonus on applications that include an F280 heat-load calculation submitted before 31 March 2027. Confirm current terms with Efficiency Manitoba before quoting them.

From a systems point of view, the F280 is useful beyond the bonus. If your visit already includes a documented load calculation, the option sheet stops being an opinion and becomes a measured recommendation. We add a step to the comfort-advisor sales process where the advisor explains what was measured and why it matters, in two minutes and plain words.

Holding the board through a long cold stretch

Manitoba cold tends to settle in rather than come and go. That changes the dispatch problem from "survive a spike" to "keep a high load running for weeks without burning out the crew".

A checklist for January and February:

  • Set a daily cap on overtime per technician, and track it on the scoreboard.
  • Rotate the on-call evening shift so no one carries it three weeks running.
  • Hold the first two slots of each day for overnight no-heat calls.
  • Move all membership visits to the shoulder seasons; none should be on the January board.
  • Have the office text an arrival window to every booked customer the evening before.

The dispatch and capacity page explains how we size those holds from your own data.

Regulators to know

The Office of the Fire Commissioner handles gas and oil-burner permits and tradesperson licensing, among other technical safety duties. The installing contractor holds the licences and pulls the permits. We give no compliance advice; we simply point you to the source.

A worked example from the membership side

Suppose a Winnipeg company has 900 members, each with one furnace tune-up a year, and a technician can do six tune-ups a day. That is 150 technician-days. If you want them all done between 1 September and 15 November, about 54 working days, you need roughly three technicians on tune-ups full time for that stretch. If you only have two to spare, either start in August or accept that some members slide into winter, when no-heat calls will crowd them out. The membership capacity guide works through the same arithmetic.

Our fees are in Canadian dollars, plus 5% GST in Manitoba and provincial sales tax only where it applies to the service. Plans are on the pricing page. Call or text (604) 632-4959, or email Ali@Sedighi.ca. We meet by video call or in person; texting is welcome.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the F280 matter to our sales process?

Efficiency Manitoba lists a $100 bonus for registered suppliers whose heat pump rebate applications include an F280 heat-load calculation before 31 March 2027. Even apart from the bonus, a documented load calculation makes your option sheet more credible. We help build it into the visit; your licensed team does the calculation.

Do electric-furnace homes need a different script?

Yes. Owners of electric furnaces usually care most about operating cost, so the presentation should lead with the comparison between options rather than equipment features.

How many technician hours should we hold back in January?

Use your own call history. Count the no-heat calls from last January's coldest week, multiply by your average call length, and hold back that many hours each day when a similar stretch is forecast.

What tax applies to your fees in Manitoba?

Manitoba clients pay 5% GST on our fees; Manitoba RST is added only where it applies to the specific service. Your proposal shows each tax line.
